Everyone would want his life to be good and the hereafter survived. Islam teaches a short prayer that includes two things at once. This prayer is very often read by the Prophet ﷺ and contains the meaning of monotheism, tawakal, and hope. Although short, the content is very broad and deep. This is the best prayer that we should continue to pray every day.

Our Lord has given us goodness, and in the hereafter, and we have a fire torture

Robbanaa Aatinaa Fid Dun-Yaa Hasanah, Wa Fil Hasanah Polatat, Wa Qinaa ‘Adzaaban Naar.

“O our Lord, give us the goodness of the world and the goodness in the hereafter and keep us from the torture of hell.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 201)

Allah ﷻ In His noble book, adz-dzikru al-ḥakīm, explains that some humans have low ideals. They only want the pleasure of the world alone, without the slightest paying attention to life after death. Allah ﷻ said:

It is one of the people who say our Lord, we are in this world and what he has in the afterlife of the creation

“Among the people praying: ‘Our God, give us (good) in the world.’ And they have no (anything) parts in the afterlife.

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 200)

After that, God praised a more noble group: those who have high ideals. They ask God the goodness of the world and the hereafter at the same time. Their prayer was made God as a form of praise in the Qur’an. This is a signal for us to emulate and practice it continuously. We are taught to always say it while understanding the ingredients that are very dense though short. The sentence is concise, but the meaning is very broad.

They started the prayer by mentioning the name and nature of God the most beautiful, namely:

Our Lord

“He is a rabbit”.

This greeting shows that God is the rabb of all beings. This recognition includes monotheism in Rububiyyah, which also demands uluhiyyah monotheism. They combine all types of monotheism implicitly and written. In their hearts, it is also that God is a special Rabb for the servants who suffer: He gently instructed his religious and worldly affairs, and he released from darkness to light.

This prayer reflects a deep sense of need to God, because no one is able to improve itself completely. Only God is able to take care of, improve, and guide them.

Therefore, when a servant prayed, he should present this great meaning: that Allah is the Rabb of all creatures and also the Rabb specifically for His lovers. Presenting this meaning will foster submission and solemn, as well as deliciousness in the municipal and praying that is not replaced by anything from the pleasure of the world.

Then, they say:

We come in this worldly

“Give us both in the world.”

This sentence is very concise, but includes all the goodness of the world that is desirable for every human being: health, a comfortable place to live, a trushy of life, a wide sustenance, useful knowledge, pious deeds, pleasant vehicles, good names, and various other world happiness. All of that is included in one word: ḥasanah (good).

Then they continued with:

And in the hereafter it is good

“And (give us) good in the afterlife.”

There is no doubt that the biggest ḥasanah in the afterlife is heaven. Anyone who escapes him, means he has lost all forms of goodness. But the afterlife is not only heaven. This includes a sense of security from extraordinary fear during human collection in Padang Mahsyar, as well as ease of reckoning (charity calculation).

This prayer is closed with the most basic request in life:

And fire torture

“And protect us from the torture of hell.”

This request contains hope that God will facilitate the causes of salvation from hell since in the world, namely by leaving all forms of immorality, doubt, and prohibition. Including the hope of not being put into hell because of sins, or if you have time to enter, may Allah issue it through intercession.

Then Allah mentioned the priority of those who said this prayer:

They have part of what they have caught ۗ and God is fasting

“They are the ones who get a part of what they have tried, and Allah is His Calculation Fast.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 202)

Because so perfect this prayer – caught the affairs of the world and the hereafter at the same time – then the Prophet ﷺ also most often said it. Anas bin Malik Radhiyallāhu ‘Anhu said:

Propaganda Prophet ﷺ: Our Lord comes to us in this world, good, and in good hereafter, and we have a fire torture

“The most common prayer of the Prophet is: ‘O Allah, give us good in the world, which is good in the hereafter, and protect us from the torture of hell.’ ‘

(HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

Anas even followed his example. He never left this prayer in every prayer. In fact, one time a friend asked Anas to pray for them. Then he prayed with this pronunciation, and said:

If God comes to you, all kindness will come to you

“If God granted that prayer for you, truly he had given all the kindness to you.”
